A Gardener's Garden
The concept for this garden came originally from Oliver Schurmann of Mount Venus Nursery. The only entrance to the garden was from the kitchen door leading along a dark area before opening up into the garden proper. Oliver's idea was to have a pond here to reflect the sky and brighten up the view from the kitchen window situated in the ground floor of the return. The materials are mostly rustical in character but the layout has a modern feel. Two small sheds at the rear have their roofs extended roofs and joined in the middle to create a sheltered sunny sitting area (the garden is facing north) even on a showery day. The large planting beds are constantly changing with the two ardent gardeners who own the property constantly experimenting with vegetables and plants. The water feature created a real wow effect for both residents and visitors. Click on the image on the left to view more photos in the 'A Gardener's Garden' gallery. |

Medium Suburban Garden
This suburban garden had been divided by a high wall and two large trees which made it feel smaller than it was. The master bedroom is on the ground floor but was getting very little light and had an unpleasant view. So the brief was simply to open up the garden and give it a logical layout making it practical to use and enjoy. A new sitting area was placed to optimise on the afternoon sunlight. The master bedroom is now flooded with the morning sun. The natural planting gives colour and texture throughout most of the year. Rural Garden
This fairly large rural garden was sloping sharply in two directions and flat areas needed to be created, hence the number of retaining walls and boulders. The original house was removed and a German "Da Vinci" was erected in its place. The concept for the garden was to open up the spectacular views to as many parts of the house as possible and to avoid clashing with the abundant surrounding nature. Small Urban Garden
This garden was a real design challenge both because of its narrowness and the slope. It required 13 steps to get from the lowest level to the top and 5 separate walking and sitting levels. Our clients were keen entertainers and a large patio area accessible from the rear living area was a must for them. We recommended against a lawn due to the lack of sunlight throughout the day. Instead a warm Chinese granite slab was used to make an otherwise quite stark garden friendlier. The beds were raised in order to keep the often windy garden tidy. The walls, capped with cedar wood, supplied plenty of seating for a large number of guests. The planting was mostly evergreen to cheer the dark winter months but with plenty of splashes of colour throughout the year.
